In the distant future, Earth has drained its natural resources under the strain of population growth and industry, forcing humanity to look to the stars. The nations of Earth unite as the United Nations Space Alliance, colonizing the Solar System and depending on far-flung outposts for the resources that keep civilization alive, with the Solar Associated Treaty Organization standing as its military shield. Decades earlier, a breakaway faction of former colonies known as the Settlement Defense Front seceded on Mars after a war of independence, and now this ruthless, militaristic power seeks to seize control of the entire system. When the SDF launches a devastating surprise assault that shatters the allied fleet, Lieutenant Nick Reyes, a special operations pilot, is thrust into command of the warship Retribution, one of the few vessels left standing.
